Building a custom pool takes time. Not because the work itself is slow, but because there are a lot of steps, a lot of moving parts, and usually, a few things you don’t see coming. If you’re getting a standard pool with no major design changes, the timeline is pretty straightforward.
But if you’re building something more involved, like new surfaces, custom hardscapes, a spa, landscaping, or structural work, expect the schedule to grow.
This breakdown walks through the process step by step. It also covers what affects timing, like permitting, weather delays, and how much you're really building.
Our Building Process
Consultation & Design
1-2 weeks
Every pool starts with a plan. This is where you figure out the layout, shape, depth, and finishes. We start by understanding your space and your goals. Then, we create a custom design that fits both seamlessly.
The back and forth here is a good thing. The more complete the plan, the fewer delays later.
Permitting and Planning
Once the design is approved, the plans go to the city or county for review. Then we break ground and begin shaping your pool with structural precision.
Simple designs sometimes clear in as little as three weeks. If the project includes custom features like grading, retaining walls, or other structural elements, it can take longer. Six to eight weeks is common. Engineering reviews can also add time, especially if your property has slope or drainage issues.
This is usually the longest phase before construction begins. It’s also the one with the least flexibility. Permitting offices move at their own pace.
Excavation and Framing
1-4 weeks
After permits are cleared, excavation begins. Our team handles the logistics: permits, engineering, and timelines. You focus on the fun part.
The crew digs the pool and shapes the structure based on the design. This usually takes a couple of days, depending on access and soil conditions.
Pool Forms & Dig
1-2 days (typically) or more, depending on the build
We install all systems and form the concrete shell. This is the shortest part of the process.
Shotcrete to Finished Project
Weeks to months
We then bring everything else together in style- your custom features, hardscaping, landscaping, BBQ islands- all the details start coming together. Then we test every detail, walk you through your new pool, and ensure it’s swim-ready.
What Affects the Pool Building Timeline?
Here are a few of the biggest factors that affect a pool build timeline:
Permitting and HOA approvals
Project scope (just a pool, or a full backyard design?)
Weather, especially rain, during finishing work
Access issues for excavation or materials
Design changes after work starts
Material availability or delays
Inspection scheduling
No two backyards are the same. Even small details, like tree removal or utility line placement, can affect the schedule.
So, How Long Does It Really Take?
For a basic custom pool, expect the full process to take around 10 to 12 weeks from the start of construction. If you’re including a full outdoor space with landscaping, hardscaping, a spa, and custom finishes, plan on 12 to 16 weeks or longer.
When you factor in design, permitting, and possible weather or inspection delays, four to six months from first meeting to final walkthrough is realistic.
